Gecko Vs. Bumper Mounted Box and bike Carrier - The majority of tire carriers on the market today are bumper mounted systems. These systems are complex and have a number of drawbacks compared to our simple bolt-on system.

Simplicity and Weight - Our rack is just over 20lbs. By eliminating a massive bumper, you eliminate a lot of bulk and weight.

Price - While we are not a budget product, the cost of just a tire carrier or just a box carrier is always going to be substantially less then the cost of a bumper AND a tire/box combo.

Innovation

The  Gecko Van Camel Carrier is the first structurally mounted carrier to open with the door. Many long hours of engineering went into making our carriers easy to install . 

Departure Angle

The last thing you want to do is limit the abilities of your 4x4 by adding a huge bumper. Owl Carriers maintain the factory departure angle while almost all bumper mounts will decrease it substantially. When a bumper hangs low off the back of the vehicle it limits the grade a 4x4 can go up or down.

Quality

We use huge mandrel bent steel tubing to achieve lightweight and strength.

Coming in at just over 12kgs, our carriers are incredibly lightweight while also offering superior durability. Aluminium is great in the right application but for road products that face a lot of vibration, steel can be a better choice. Aluminium although light, can catastrophically fail in a high vibration environments.

Paintbond 310
A Liquid chemical which when diluted in warm water will simultaneously degrease and form a thin, protective phosphate conversion coating on steel, zinc and aluminium surfaces.
This process complies with defence standard 03-11 class 1V

Shot Blasting
Shot blasting is the process of removing surface corrosion by applying an abrasive media under pressure it is an excellent pre-treatment for steel as it cleans and roughens the surface.
By lowering the pressure and replacing the blasting media to a non-ferrous grit for example glass bead or aluminium oxide it is also a good technique for removing machine marks left after turning.

Hinge requirements 

To install the wheel carrier you need to be sure you have the correct hinges on your vans. Mercedes Offer two kinds. Most vans are supplied from their factory with 270 degree hinges . they fit flat back against the side of the van. However a factory supplied option for 180 degree hinge. this is what is required to install our wheel carrier. this are standard fit on the Hymer vans and many other Camper Van builders. here is is an image to help you indentify which hinges you have.
